Mission United: Standing by Our Veterans When They Need It Most

Transitioning from military life to civilian life isn’t always easy. Whether it’s securing stable housing, finding a job, or accessing medical care, many veterans face challenges that can feel overwhelming, especially when trying to navigate these systems alone.

Mission United connects veterans and their families to the services they need to thrive in the community they call home. It’s more than just a referral program; it’s a safety net and a lifeline. And for many, it’s a new beginning.

One local veteran turned to Mission United when her life took an unexpected turn.

At 64 years old, Army veteran Teresa found herself on the brink of homelessness for a second time. But this time, she had a cancer diagnosis and a three-day eviction notice in hand. Living alone on a fixed Social Security income, she had recently been forced to give up her part-time job due to her health. Medical bills and prescription costs quickly piled up, leaving nothing left for rent.

But this wasn’t her first encounter with our Mission United team. We met Teresa back in 2019 when she was experiencing homelessness and visiting a food pantry. At that time, we helped her secure stable housing. So when she found herself in crisis again, she knew where to turn.

The Mission United team stepped in immediately, covering two months of rent to stop the eviction and coordinating with Teresa's VA case worker to help her apply for a HUD-VASH voucher, which now makes her housing affordable for the long term. The team also provided food and other essentials to ease her burden during treatment.

Thanks to this support, Teresa remained in her home and avoided the stress of moving during a health crisis. Her outlook is hopeful, her spirits remain high, and she continues to receive the care she needs, surrounded by the stability she deserves.
